Football back on the pitches at Mount St Mary’s College after a break of more than a century
The Mount team played against St Edmund’s College from Canberra, Australia, who were staying at the College as part of a UK tour.
A very wet, cold and windy afternoon didn’t dampen the spirits of either team and the spectators who braved the conditions were treated to a great match.Head of Games and Sport at Mount St Mary’s College, Dylan Campbell, said it had been fantastic to see football being played at the College after such a very long absence.
“We have something of reputation for our rugby, hockey, cricket and netball so it was fantastic to get a team together and play the first football match here in over a century,” he said.
“This will kick-start a new era of football at Mount St Mary’s College and we’re pulling together a fixture list and coaching programme for this current academic year. We want our girls and boys to experience as much variety and fun as they can in sport.
“The match ended in a 6-3 victory for Mount St Mary’s College, but it wasn’t about the score - the Australians put on a great game and there was a great sense of camaraderie and that was so important for such a historic match.”
Jonathan Hall, a housemaster from St Edmund’s College who is travelling with the boys, said it had been wonderful for them to take part in such an important match.
“This trip is about encouraging our pupils to participate in football and to boost interest in it at our school in Canberra,” he said. “It’s fantastic to have been involved in a match which had a lot of history attached to it.”
Harrison Knowles from Grammar (Year 10), who scored three of the Mount’s goals, said the match was definitely something to remember.
“It was a really amazing experience,” he said. “I’m really proud to have taken part and I’m looking forward to hopefully playing football again for the College again very soon.”
